When you meet Padres fan Mr. Tate, he comes across as your average baseball fan.
A season ticket holder, Mr. Tate has followed the ups and downs for the Padres franchise for over twenty years. Every Padres home game you can find him sitting just behind the dugout along the first base line with a box of nachos resting on his left knee, a cold draft beer in the cup holder near his right hand, and a camera draped around his neck. The years haven’t been kind to Mr. Tate as he looks older and more weathered than his 54 years of age and the buttons of his Greg Vaughn jersey are in a constant struggle to keep the two sides of fabric from flying away from a midsection bulging from 20+ years of stadium food.
Mr. Tate agreed to meet with me on this night and I found him sitting in his customary seat behind the home dugout with his customary nachos and beer. I took a seat next to him and began our conversation:
